CHAPTER NINE

Mac stood in the dark, looking at his team. “I know we are all tired and it is super late, but we have a new mission and our day is just beginning.” They looked somber, overwhelmed by the crash. He looked each in the eye, starting at the left with Cash Raider and Ward Bonte. Then Sanchez and Zhou. Followed by Easton, Chi, and Kantaro. Finally, on the end, was Boone, towering above everyone. SCOUT stood at his side.

“I’m estimating between five to eight kilometers to the crash site. Do we all agree?”

They did.

“We’ve got a general heading loaded into SCOUT. We’re likely to encounter Honz Dynasty fighters out there, so stay alert.”

“And, don’t forget Teeb’s final warning,” Raider added.

“What did he say?” Sanchez asked.

Mac chuckled. “He said whatever we do, don’t enter the jungle.”

Sanchez laughed nervously. “Uh, Major Mac, what did he mean by that?”

“Who knows? He was just being vague and mysterious.”

“Well, uh, maybe we should listen to his warning. You know what I mean?” Sanchez said.

Boone boomed at Sanchez. “Do you want to stay here? I can get you a blankey and pacifier to make you comfortable. I’ll even tuck you into bed so the rest of us can go do the actual work.”

“Now that hurts, big man. That’s a low blow,” Sanchez feigned being hurt.

Mac knew Sanchez was just being extreme and wouldn’t stay back for any reason. You wouldn’t be able to force Sanchez to stay back. He just enjoyed complaining about everything for entertainment value.

“Nobody’s staying here,” Mac said. “Besides, Sanchez, we need that sharp shooting eye of yours. We are going to stay together and find that crash site before the enemy does. If there are any survivors, we need to rescue them and hold out until our ride shows up.”

Sanchez said, “Nothing to it, Major Mac. I’m just kidding around.” He laughed nervously again. “You know I’m just a kidder.”

“More like a kid,” Boone said.

“I just wanted to make Easy feel better about himself by showing him others might also be afraid. These SAS guys have it pretty easy usually. That’s why they call him Easy.”

“Not a chance, Sanchez,” Easy said. “We’ll leave you in the dust.”

“Idiot,” Raider said quietly.

Sanchez just grinned, obviously pleased with himself for keeping the mood light. Being the one with constant gallows humor was one of Sanchez’s most important roles in the Space Warfare Group.

Mac checked the small screen on the underside of his wrist. “Looks like about eighteen hours until our ship arrives, if the Navy timeline from earlier holds true. I’m assuming there is a Navy spacecraft zooming through space to get here as fast as possible. But, in the meantime, we have work to do. I want Boone and SCOUT up front, leading the way. Sanchez, Raider and I’ll go next. Easy, you guys run caboose on this one.”

“Roger that,” Easton said.

“That is the easiest place to be,” Sanchez said. Easton punched him in the shoulder with a laugh.

“Alright, let’s go.”

Boone released SCOUT
